- W947654037 abstract "As the most numerous and economically the strongest minority community – Germans enjoyed exceptional privileges in Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In June 1920. already they have established Kulturbund in Novi Sad which. Although it has been closed twice due to its political activities, upon promulgation if its By-Laws ('By-Laws of Schwabisch-German Education Association') it begins a broad range of commercial, educational and cultural activities, organizing various societies and associations in order to strengthen 'hibernated' (exception of G. Grasl dating back to 1920) sense of German national self-awareness. Deutschtum in Jugoslawien – 'has a good economic and cultural outlook' (Ivo Andric). However, their anti-Yugoslav activity, especially in years preceding the war, fifth column activity, en masse participation in Wermacht during the Second World War, predetermined their fate (en masse departure with Wermacht units, but also due to decisions of AVNOJ). Present 'demands of Sudetten Germans' on 'annulling' Benes decrees, as well as demands of Yugoslav Germans (who have gathered in several associations based in Novi Sad and Subotica, each numbering several hundred members) to 'annul' decisions of AVNOJ, prompts another clarification of their position, role and fate in the light of historical and legal circumstances. Namely, out of almost 500.000 Germans (Schwaben Volksdeutscher), according to 1921. and 1931. statistical data." @default.
