- W9484550 abstract "The evolution and equilibrium of very-high-temperature plasma obtained by injection of molecular ions or fast atoms are studied. A system of coupled differential equations describes the densities of ions and neutral molecules, inside and outside the plasma. This system represents the balance of the particles with the plasma assumed to be stable. Equilibrium solutions give characteristic curves, with S shape for the plasma and Z shape for the neutral gas as a function of the injected current. The two values of critical currents are derived and discussed. Molecular-ion injection and fast-atom injection are compared. The first method takes advantage of the possibility of an efficient multiple passage. Single passage, in the case of fast atoms, permits reduction of neutral gas sources. This condition is very critical for the success of this method. For the critical conditions, neutral gas density is much higher in the first case than in the second one. Therefore, it is possible to use the ion- pumping effect to reduce the value of critical current in the case of molecular- ion injection, and not possible in the case of fast-atom injection. If an auxiliary plasma at low temperature is used for trapping, a transition current can bemore » defined above which the hot plasma increases in temperature and density if the cold plasma is cut off. Taking into account the exchange of energy between the hot and cold plasmas, the existence of optimum conditions is shown and the value of the optimum transition current is derived. Using an auxiliary plasma is of interest only with a good efficiency of multiple passage of the injected beam. Some other properties and the detailed influence of the parameters are shown in numerical results obtained with electronic computers.
