- W94854316 abstract "This chapter discusses shikimate pathway in higher plants, phenylalanine ammonia lyase, and the phenylpropanoid pool. Organic chemists have long been familiar with the wealth of substances of diverse structural type which are derived from plants or microorganisms and to which no general function in the overall metabolism can be assigned. The purely chemical problems relating to structure have been solved, and attention has rightly switched to become focused upon more biochemical considerations such as their mode of biosynthesis and physiological function in the plant or organism. Secondary metabolites have also become of particular interest to plant taxonomists and geneticists as it is clear that they represent a distinctive chemical manifestation of the individuality of species. Knowledge of their distribution, thus, assists in elucidating lines of evolution and plant classifications. One distinction of this type that has already been noted on several occasions is that between woody and nonwoody plants. Higher plants, ferns, mosses, and liverworts contain a range of secondary metabolites—alkaloids, essential oils, pigments, phenolic glycosides and tannins—and many of these are derived biosynthetically from intermediates in, or the amino acid end products of, the shikimate pathway." @default.
