- W948545680 abstract "Squall lines and rainbands occur over both tropical and extratropical areas of the Earth in both oceanic and land areas. They affect society in major ways because of their wide geographical range and frequency of occurrence and because they typically contain high rainfall rates. In the Great Plains of the United States, for example, a high percentage of the annual rainfall occurs during late spring and early summer. A large fraction of this rainfall comes from squall lines that propagate generally from west to east, associated with disturbances in the upper-level westerly flow, and “fueled” by copious amounts of water vapor from the low-level moist air moving north from the Gulf of Mexico. Agricultural interests in the Great Plains and the many other areas of the world are critically dependent upon this rainfall. An additional concern is the severe weather frequently accompanying squall lines, which predominantly, but not exclusively, comes in the form of high winds near the low-level outflow boundaries. A very-slow-moving large squall line can also cause flash flooding of streams and small rivers. Small hail occurs not infrequently with squall lines, and when driven horizontally by strong winds, can devastate standing crops. The very intense lightning with these systems and an occasional tornado also pose threats to society." @default.
