- W94907672 abstract "Since the introduction of propofol into clinical practice in the late 1980’s, over 1000 articles on the intravenous (IV) anesthetic have been published in the peer-reviewed anesthesia literature. Although propofol was initially approved for use as an induction and maintenance hypnotic agent, its clinical uses have expanded greatly to include indications for cardiac, neurosurgical, and pediatric anesthesia, as well as monitored anesthesia care (MAC) and sedation in the intensive care unit (ICU) (1). Propofol has rapidly become the drug of choice for induction of anesthesia in outpatients undergoing ambulatory procedures, and it is becoming increasingly popular for pediatric anesthesia. Propofol’s unique antiemetic (2) and mood-altering (3) properties may lead to new clinical applications in the future. Although anecdotal reports suggest that propofol may possess euphorigenic (improved “sense of well-being”) properties, this finding has not been substantiated in controlled, doubleblind studies (4). Yet, patients clearly “like” the effects of propofol, and it may have potential for abuse or diversion (5)." @default.
