- W950211009 abstract "Publisher Summary Lasing-mode stabilization—especially transverse-mode stabilization—is one of the most important technologies for semiconductor lasers for realizing a stable light source in optical communication systems. To stabilize the mode, there are two approaches: (1) introduction of rigid waveguide structure and (2) elimination of gain-profile deformation by narrowing the current-injection path. This chapter reviews the achievements on mode stabilization and discusses the technology and theory for semiconductor-laser mode control. It describes the origin of transverse-mode instability and the method of mode stabilization and characteristics of mode-stabilized lasers. It also elaborates on longitudinal mode behaviors and the method of their stabilization. In transverse-mode–stabilized lasers, longitudinal mode control is necessary for long-distance fiber communications. Various methods have been reported for longitudinal mode control. Among them, lasers with grating feedback seem to be the most promising. However, more effort is needed to reproducibly fabricate pure single-mode lasers." @default.
