- W950239570 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses several specific aspects of membrane formation and behavior of cells. A brief survey on the major routes of membrane circulation is given as a background. The concept that membranes move from one compartment of the cell to another derives primarily from microscopic studies. Current views have evolved from earlier formulations about membrane flow or shuttling. Exocytosis and endocytosis affect the cell surface during the secretory cycle. The extensive movement of membrane through the cell surface during secretion can produce large-scale transient changes in surface permeability or other properties. For gland cells, secretory granule membranes are constituted to avoid making the cell surface more permeable to ions or water. For nerve terminals, the situation is less clear. As it is not certain how synaptic vesicles fill with transmitters, transmitters or immediate precursors can cross the vesicle membrane. Thus, in the absence of controls or other contravening factors, incorporation of vesicle membranes into the cell surface might open channels for the passage of transmitters between axoplasm and external space." @default.
