- W95040445 abstract "Parallel Particle Simulations using the POOMA FrameworkJulian C. CummingsyWilliam F. HumphreyAbstractThe POOMA Framework is an ob ject-oriented library and application suite imple-mented in C++ which enables the parallel simulation of the dynamics of interactingparticles and elds. Using templates, POOMA provides a exible and intuitive syntaxto express global eld and particle op erations and creates applications with near hand-co ded p erformance. POOMA is employed at presentin multi-material hydro dynamicscalculations, gyrokinetic plasma dynamics, and Monte Carlo neutron transp ort simu-lations. Currently under development within the POOMA Framework are interactivevisualization to ols for use in all applications develop ed using POOMA.1Intro ductionThe POOMA (Parallel Ob ject-Oriented Metho ds and Appliations) Framework is a libraryof software comp onents for use in the development of scienti c computational applicationsemploying parallel computers. It provides a set of exible software abstractions of physicalquantities such as particles and elds, and an ecient, data-parallel syntax for expressingthe numerical solutions to the equations of motion or state governing a physical system[10, 9].In many simulations of complex physical problems, a recurring set of metho ds andsoftware abstractions for the physical domain and numerical mo deling pro cedures oftenarise.Theserecurringconceptsinclude:datastructuresrepresentingparticleswithasso ciatedp osition, velo city, andotherattributes;datastructuresrepresenting eldquantities discretized on a mesh over some spatial domain; and op erations inolving theseparticle and eldquantities.Manysimulations alsorequirelargememoryandCPUresources to study phenomena which o ccur across large domains in time or space.Thepurp ose of the POOMA Framework is to help decrease the time for b oth the developmentand the execution of scienti c computional applications by recognizing these two featuresof suchapplications andapplying thetechniques ofparallelcomputation andob ject-oriented design. The POOMA Framework includes ob jects for commonly o ccuring physicalquantities such as particles and elds, and encapsulates the use of parallel algorithms withinthe ob ject-oriented structure of the Framework.Anumb er of packages have b een develop ed to aid in the implementation and executionof scienti c computing applications, such as the extensiveParallel ELLPACK package [6].An imp ortant feature of the POOMA Framework is its supp ort for b oth particle and eldquantities in a single integrated, extensible to olkit, which allows POOMA to address awider range of problems than systems which fo cus primarily on, e.g., solution of systems ofpartial di erential equations. In this pap er we fo cus on the particle simulation features ofThis work was funded by the US Department of Energy.yAdvanced Computing Lab oratory, Los Alamos National Lab oratory, Los Alamos, NM.1" @default.
