- W950521518 abstract "This chapter discusses the geophysical methods for geopressure detection and evaluation. The different methods of measuring rock velocities include laboratory, well logs, Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP), and surface seismic. Of all the geophysical methods, the reflection seismic method is essentially the only technique used to predict pore pressures. The seismic method detects changes of interval velocity with depth from velocity analysis of the seismic data. These changes are in turn related to lithology, pore fluid type, rock fracturing, and pressure changes within a stratigraphic column. When the factors affecting the velocity are understood for a given area, a successful pressure prediction can be made. Examination of the velocities obtained from the different methods enhances our understanding of the velocity of rock and the pitfalls of the methods used to measure it. Because geopressuring is a stratigraphic phenomenon, the seismic processors should pay special attention to preserving and extracting maximum information about stratigraphy from the seismic data if they expect their velocity analyses to be useful for geopressure prediction." @default.
