- W950549663 abstract "This chapter discusses the retinal and cortical inputs to cat superior colliculus in the term of composition, convergence and laminar specificity. The key to understanding the functional significance of such heterogeneity is probably to be found in its relation to the efferent organization of the colliculus, because individual components of these afferent projections, such as the major classes of efferent cells, exhibit distinctive laminar distributions. The extreme diversity of tectofugal efferent projections implies a multiplicity of functional roles for the superior colliculus, including visual guidance of eye and head movements and transmission of visual signals to the extrastriate cortex. The two components of the retinocollicular pathway appeared to drive separate populations of collicular cells differing in their laminar distribution: those driven by the “W direct” pathway predominated throughout the superficial layers; while a smaller number excited by the “Y direct” input occupied the deepest part of the superficial gray layer (SGS) and stratum opticum." @default.
