- W95090390 abstract "All counselors would agree that prevention of academic, physical, and interpersonal skill deficits in young children is better than correction of these problems after they have appeared. Early identification of the lack of developmental readiness for such skills is therefore an important aspect of prevention. Unfortunately, elementary school counselors have had few instruments available for screening preschool and kindergarten children and determining on which children to concentrate preventive strategies. They have usually had little training in devising strategies of intervention that classroom teachers can use with children at these age levels to remedy deficits or speed up development in areas that may be important for the child's later academic and social success. In addition, many counselors find it difficult to coordinate their efforts with those of classroom personnel such as teachers and teachers' aides or with the child's parents. Yet knowing how to coordinate such assessments and to provide activities and interventions leading to the development of systematic learning skills in children with specific deficits or lags should be an important role for the elementary school counselor (McKay & Hillman, 1979; Meyers, Martin, & Hyman, 1977) and should help in determining educational therapies for specific children (Keat, 1977). This article describes the use of a screening device, the Barclay Early Childhood Skill Assessment System (BECSAS) (Barclay & Barclay, 1976), which uses teacher, child, and parental input and includes a component that spells out possible intervention strategies based on specific deficits identified for the particular child. It also reports the results of using the BECSAS to pinpoint and analyze parental educational level and to determine its relationship to the child's skill deficits." @default.
