- W952429732 abstract "This issue of Generations constitutes a mini-training course in person-centered care for people with dementia. Improved quality of life for this population depends upon the expansion of such care into all care settings. The articles in this issue of Generations describe the central concepts of person- tered care for people with dementia and discuss implications for practice with individu- als in different stages of dementia and in a wide array of care settings. It is essential to share these ideas throughout your organization and practice community in order to provide better, more appropriate care for people with dementia. This concluding article suggests ways the articles herein can be used for training that will result in greater understanding and wider implementation of person-centered care for people with dementia. We identify one impor- tant concept from each article and list what trainees should know about the concept; relevant approaches for experiential learning; and skills that should result from the training. The identified concepts are only examples; you may prefer to focus training on the articles' other key concepts. This article also outlines seven steps to build and implement a plan for training and reviews six principles for adult learning.Changing individual and organizational care practices can be difficult, and it is common to get stuck in old, comfortable ways of doing things. It is important to be patient, informative, and supportive in advocating for practice changes that can improve care and quality of life for people with dementia.Seven Steps for Building and Implementing a Training PlanAs you think about ways to share the concepts and practice-related information contained in this issue, consider the following seven steps (Fazio, 2008) for organizing your thoughts and building a training plan:1. Review materials and resources. Review the articles and think about how they apply to your care setting or practice. You may want to look for additional resources, such as video, that highlight particular concepts.2. Meet with leadership. In presenting any new idea or program, it is vital that leader- ship is in agreement. Describe what you have learned from the articles and present your ideas about how to share that learning with others. Be prepared for challenging questions and be open to different ways of reaching the same objective.3. Develop an action plan. Put together a plan for how to provide training that will lead to practice change within your setting or prac- tice. You will need short-term and long-term goals. You may want to work with individuals outside your organization to increase credibility and buy-in-they can help represent the plan to others and monitor progress. Think about possible challenges or barriers and ways to address them.4. Share the learning. Find ways to share what you learned with others who have various roles and responsibilities. Individual coaching sessions, small group discussions, and formal training programs are options to consider.5. Reward change and celebrate success. Build in approaches to reward staff for making positive change-a step we often overlook. Recognize progress, and consider low-cost or no-cost rewards like a monthly certificate or celebration.6. Build a support system. Because change is difficult, a support system can be invaluable for talking through challenges, sharing solutions, and maintaining momentum. Con- sider one-to-one or small group meetings.7. Evaluate and revise. No plan is perfect; your plan will need to be revised over time and incorporate new information. Have a system in place to evaluate progress and revise actions as needed. Stay open to new ways of doing things that will accomplish the same goal.Training Should Incorporate Adult Learning PrinciplesTo bring current knowledge and best practices in person-centered care into settings and practices across the continuum, the delivery of training must be appropriate for learners. …" @default.
