- W952801095 abstract "Platelets interact with a large number of agents through specific and non-specific receptor mechanisms. Platelets show a striking similarity to neurons with respect to serotonin uptake. This is the reason for the increasing use of platelets as a model for the serotonergic nerve terminals. Thus studies are described where the active uptake of serotonin by mentally sick people was compared to that of healthy people. The use of platelets to study neurocytotoxic compounds such as: 6-hydroxydopamine, 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine and 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine is evaluated. As platelets can be obtained as a pure cell system of human origin, they might serve as a very good model for these studies. Platelets can also be used as a very quick and reliable system to evaluate drug activity, mainly antidepressants." @default.
