- W953998686 abstract "This chapter focuses on application of simple and sophisticated theories to refractory transition metal carbides and nitrides. These compounds are characterized by high melting points, ultrahardness, good electrical and thermal conductivity, and good corrosion resistance, and are commonly referred to as refractory hard metals. This unusual combination of properties has challenged theorists to study the chemical bonding in these compounds that are built up from two different atoms MX, where M labels the transition metal and X denotes carbon or nitrogen. Band theoretical methods applied to stoichiometric phases of these compounds have shown that the bonding involves simultaneous contributions from metallic, covalent and ionic bonding. Several band structure calculations for transition metal nitrides and carbides crystallizing in the sodium chloride structure have been presented in the chapter. The band mapping made for TiN shows several similarities but also certain differences compared to VN. It is found that the structures that appeared between about −5 and −6 eV may originate from band edge emission and from contributions from the steep part of the band." @default.
