- W95445232 abstract "in this discussion of Du cote de chez Swann and Le temps retrouve will not take the position, represented so boldly by James Olney, that there is an I standing behind every text and informing it at every point. That would be to imply that the texts were written by an author who exists apart from the writing one who is telling the story of his life as it has been up to the time of writing and who is essentially reporting or presenting (re-presenting) that which has already transpired before the writing. Following Derrida's II n'y a pas de hors-texte, the focus of my attention will be on the event of textuality; will eschew any notion of a unified consciousness preceding and informing the writing. want to bracket questions of author-ity and examine the motions of the text itself on the topic of identity and self in Proust. am confining my remarks to the first and last volumes of A la recherche du temps perdu to give focus to this brief essay; that Proust wrote the epiphanic part of Le temps retrouve right after working on Combray lends some justification to this focus. When placed side by side, the two volumes reveal a conspicuous attempt within the text itself to cultivate a range of identities for Marcel. My sense of this text is that Proust pursues in the act of writing a set of identities for the different Marcels the young boy, the older man, and the writer which revolve around the issue of subjectivity and its limitations. What interests me are the textual instances of this posturing and the conspicuous pursuit of and insistence on the notion of ego transcendence. Taking Derrida's cue in the White Mythology rigorously to interrogate the use of metaphorical language, we can follow with a unique sensitivity Proust's attempts to suggest both limiting subjectivity and self-transcendence.
