- W95481574 abstract "Power stations based on atomic energy are considered seriously even in countries in which the coal and oil supplies are abundant. One of the chief methods of making use of the energy of atomic fuels involves the direct utilization of the fission energy of U/sup 235/ without taking advantage of the excess neutrons; these burner reactors' are useful for power stations located in areas in which the fossile fuel supplies are expensive or for supplying the atomic icebreaker Lenin.'' In a second type of reactors, the neutrons are also used to create new fuel from fertile materials such as U/sup 238/ or Th/sup 232/. This breeding'' principle is used in many reactor designs all over the world,-- in the Soviet Union at the Novovoronezh and the Beloyarsk power stations where nuclear superheat is also used, and in reactors built in East Germany and in Czechoslovakia. By the end of the century, the fast-breeder reactor will probably play a very important role in energy generation. A 5000-kw experimental fast reactor was placed in operation 3 years ago. Scientific problems of special interest for the nuclear technology includei the experimental dete rmination of the neutron-physical constants of fissionable and structural materials, breedingmore » conditions, reactor control problems, determination of neutron fluxes, etc. Experimental reactors, accelerators, electromagnetic isotope separators, and complex neutron spectrometers are used in these studies.
