- W95528518 abstract "To date considerable progress has been made in the first stage of the TAC program to assess the use of Quench protection diodes (QPD) within the cold region of the SSC superconducting magnets. Our principle goal in this period was to experimentally obtain information that will assist us in designing apparatus for future tests. More specifically, we wished to address the following areas of uncertainty: operational difficulties associated with installing and operating an experiment at a nuclear reactor; diode behavior when subjected to neutron radiation while held close to the temperature of liquid nitrogen; and the extent to which diodes can be annealed by heating them up to 593/degree/K. To gain information in these areas, we performed an irradiation of sixteen Westinghouse diodes at the Texas A and M Nuclear Science Center reactor. In the interest of avoiding the expense and long lead times associated with obtaining new equipment, we used apparatus that was on hand or which could be quickly obtained or constructed. Further tests of the irradiated diodes and analysis of the data already acquired will be continuing for some time, but the results already available will allow us to proceed with designing apparatus for accurate and reliablemore » irradiation testing of diodes.
