• W95540332 abstract "Low flotation of coarse particles has been a problem confronting the minerals industry. In this study flotation of a coarse coal sample obtained from the Bowen Basin in the state of Queensland, Australia was examined to identify factors limiting its flotation. It was found that the combustible recovery of the coal sample was only 65% despite of the relatively high combustible grade in the feed. The low combustible recovery was primarily contributed to the low recovery of coarse particles in the fraction of 300 to 710 μm. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis shows that around 25% of the coal surface has been oxidised, resulting in a decrease in surface hydrophobicity and subsequent coarse particle flotation. In order to increase flotation of the coarse coal, two approaches were developed. On one hand, a polar collector was mixed with the conventional collector diesel to address the oxidised coal surface by improving surface hydrophobicity. This approach increased the combustible recovery by 20% without affecting the ash grade in the final coal product. On the other hand, a polyglycol-type frother, stronger than the conventional frother MIBC increased the combustible recovery by 10%, probably through the increased bubble-particle collision and reduced bubble-particle detachment.
