- W95704018 abstract "In the frame of the COLUMBUS program, a high power, fully protected, and integrated inverter to drive and accurately control fans has been developed. The type of motor is three phases brushless DC motor integrating Hall effect position sensors. The maximum power to be provided to the motor is 300W. This electronics is supplied by a 120V regulated power bus. Moreover a high level of safety, required by human space flight applications, is implemented. A six switches PWM inverter provides power, up to 300W, to the star coupled three phases. In order to have a high efficiency, the motor is supplied, through the inverter, directly by the 120V power bus. Furthermore a 20kHz PWM switching frequency allows to minimise the sum of the conduction and switching losses. At full motor power of 300W, the efficiency of the inverter is more than 96% and the total typical dissipation of the electronic unit is less than 25W. Phase current measurement and limitation are implemented allowing to control the torque during motor start up and load transients. A very accurate speed measurement is performed from the Hall effect sensor signals. It is used to control, by a closed loop, the real speed motor, from a telecommanded speed value. The accuracy of the speed control is 1% in worse case, taking into account temperature, ageing, radiation, motor characteristics drifts and load variations. This accuracy is warranted for any speed in the range from 8000 to 16000 rpm. A flyback DC/DC converter delivers, from the 120V power bus, the low level power supplies required by the speed control, current control, protection, telecommand and telemetry circuits. As the inverter and its control and protection circuits are referenced directly to the primary power return, all telecommand and telemetry circuits, referenced to secondary return, are insulated by optocoupler or transformer. The 120V power bus interface is performed by an input current limiter fulfilling the requirements of ON/OFF switching, inrush current limiter and current limiter in case of failure. Additional protections circuits are underspeed and overspeed detection, short-circuit or overload detection on inverter output. In these cases the inverter is switched OFF." @default.
