- W9573280 abstract "Only a learning community can adults and children together explore and practice the mutuality and reciprocity essential to sustaining human life and democratic society, Ms. Lipsitz points out. Why should we about caring? Because without caring, individual human beings cannot thrive, communities become violent battlegrounds, the American democratic experiment must ultimately fail, and the planet will not be able to support life. The fact that schools are too frail a reed upon which to rest sole responsibility for fostering the humanity of the next generation does not relieve them of their obligation to play their essential part this intergenerational drama. The articles this Kappan special section do not challenge schools to start a revolution, nor do they call for restructuring, systemic change, or any of the other buzz words that litter the school-improvement landscape. They ask for what is possible, right now, classrooms across the nation. As George Noblit, Dwight Rogers, and Brian McCadden suggest, 'Revolutions' the education system, such as the one Nel Noddings proposes The Challenge to Care Schools, are worthy objectives. Yet, as needed as such a revolution is, are things that can be done the meantime. In the meantime, a subtle shift focus may allow for caring relations to be more easily fostered and may help alter the culture of schooling. The authors this section believe that in the meantime we can make schools places where people not only learn, but also construct moral lives. Noddings herself agrees: Some educators today - and I include myself among them - would like to see a complete reorganization of the school curriculum. We would like to give a place to the questions and issues that lie at the core of human existence.... A realistic assessment of schooling the present political climate makes it clear that such a plan is not likely to be implemented. However, we can use the rich vocabulary of educational planning and introduce themes of into regular subject-matter classes. Noddings holds that developing people with a strong capacity for care should be a major objective of responsible education, one that can be addressed by aiming the right direction and that need not await a revolution. This is not to say that the argument Noddings makes is not revolutionary. She asserts that there is more to life and learning than the academic proficiency demonstrated by test scores and that schools have a central ethical commitment to address themes of care. Such assertions strike a discordant note to ears attuned to today's discourse on school policy. An alien who lands on the roof of a school during a parent/teacher conference or a school board meeting would certainly consider Noddings' statements revolutionary. And one who landed on the roof of the state legislature would be even more astounded. Therefore, it comes as no surprise, given the cacophony about control and the silence about caring, that Kris Bosworth found that most students have little opportunity to practice caring or to be rewarded for doing so. Schools themselves are rewarded for individual achievement, and they are unlikely such a climate to create caring communities. The message of these articles is that a caring culture schools requires not radical restructuring of policies, curricula, and systems, but subtle changes attitudes and scope. Educators must begin to consider their students within the context of the students' ongoing development and within the social context of their families and communities. In some cases, this shift attitude might imply redefining the teacher's role. As Norman Newberg explains, Cluster organization asks teachers to make a radical shift away from subject or grade identification as their primary focus and to take a longer view of the students and subjects they teach. And yet it is not enough for individual educators to change; a caring culture schools requires the involvement of a child's entire community. …" @default.
