- W95736884 abstract "This chapter discusses the function of Ti plasmid-coded proteins in Agrobacterium tumefaciens and in crown gall tumor cells. The Ti plasmid has the coding capacity of roughly 100 to 150 proteins, on the assumption that all of its genes code for a protein product. In comparison with other genetic systems, there are probably coding regions for non-messenger RNA as well as nascent regions. Two periplasmic proteins Per-1 and Per-2 associated with the periplasmic space and outer membranes of A. tumefaciens C-58 have been isolated and characterized. Per-1 and Per-2 have molecular weights of 37,500 and 37,800, respectively. Per-1 is synthesized in in vitro using the Ti plasmid as template. The protein is, therefore, a direct gene product of the Ti plasmid. The functional role of both proteins is yet to be elucidated. Preliminary indications are that neither protein has restriction endonuclease activity because periplasmic restriction endonuclease Atu I has a molecular weight greater than 50,000. These proteins also are not characteristic of a DNA topoisomerase, an Agrobacterium enzyme recognizing only negative twisted superhelical DNA of eukaryotic DNA and viral DNA of eukaryotes." @default.
