- W95739075 abstract "SPY SCANDAL IN BAKU. (By Sokhbet Mamedov. Nezavisimaya gazeta, Feb. 19, 2014, p. 1. Complete text:) Baku - A spy scandal has erupted in Baku, featuring two US Senate staff members and Radio Liberty Khadidzha Ismailova. It all started with publication by prominent journalist and human rights advocate Einulla Fatullayev that mentioned undercover notes from Radio Liberty correspondent alleging that opposition leaders are effectively puppets of the ruling public awaits response to the incident from the presidential administration, but so far there has been none. ... Citing reliable sources, Fatullayev revealed to readers of the online publication haqqin.az the details of January 2014 business trip to Baku taken by two staff members of the US Senate, John Zadrozny and Daniel Vajdic [sic; Vajdic works at the American Enterprise Institute - Trans.]. ... In the article, the human rights advocate cites Russian sources as stating that these staff members are directly tied to American intelligence services - or rather, so-called illegal intelligence - and that the one and only goal of their visit to Baku was to collect intelligence data. ... It came to light that Zadrozny and Vajdic held series of closed meetings at the US Embassy and one open meeting that took place at the Art Garden, restaurant located in the Old Town quarter in the center of Baku. Among the invitees was Khadidzha Ismailova, who is a fixture at such meetings. After painting black picture of life in Azerbaijan, dumbfounded the overseas visitors by asserting: The situation in Azerbaijan has reached the brink of revolution, but the fact that there has been no revolution yet is the fault of the West, which needs to reconsider its policy with respect to Baku, [including] increasing funding for the opposition and civil society. above quotation comes from the haqqin.az publication. ... It goes on to report that during that conversation, the Americans inquired as to why the opposition is disintegrating and why many NGOs have been reborn as GONGOs (state-organized nongovernmental organizations - NG); they also asked why the protest movement is weakening. When John Zadrozny asked the direction question: Who among the opposition has ties to the authorities? responded that she had laid out all the data in report available to [the Americans]. That report - which haqqin.az has at its disposal, according to Fatullayev - presents to the American government list of Azerbaijani politicians and public figures with whom Washington should immediately break off relations, because those persons were found to have colluded with the current authorities. list includes practically all opposition party leaders and activists, as well as some human rights activists and NGO leaders. ... It is curious that Ismailova, who raised the scandal, could not give the public reasonable explanation for it. US Embassy in Azerbaijan, in turn, advised people to contact the US Senate with questions about the purposes and outcomes of the Americans' visit. As for the members of the Ismailova list, they have so far made no comments on the scandalous publication. ... Meanwhile, the press is demanding clarification. For example, the popular journalist Mirshakhin Agayev commented during his analysis program Khesabat (Report) on the ANS TV channel: Fatullayev's article levels such weighty accusations that someone eventually has to respond to them. And the allegations that well-known oppositionists and public figures are being sponsored by various state institutions have caused such great uproar that this issue has to be clarified. Whether the next few days bring any clarity remains to be seen." @default.
