• W957420829 abstract "Introduction: Viral hepatitis B and C constitute an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide because of its potential for chronic evolution. These infections represent some of the causes related to the development of malignant neoplasm of liver and intrahepatic bile ducts, the third leading cause of death related to cancer worldwide. Objective: Analyze trends in HBVand HCV-related deaths in Brazil between 1980 and 2010. Methods: Time series study with data from the Mortality Information System, considering the underlying cause of death. Mortality rates both crude and standardized, age specific by region of residence and sex were calculated and trends analyzed using polynomial regression models. Results: Trends in hepatitis B and C related mortality was increased in all age groups, regions, and for both sexes, although higher among males. The average mortality rate for hepatitis B was 0,19 per 100.000 inhabitants with annual linear increase of 0,012 (R = 0.92; p <0.001). The Northern Region holds the highest mortality rates and increments per year. Regarding hepatitis C, the mean mortality rate for the country was 0,70 per 100.000 inhabitants with an annual increase of 0,071 linear (R = 0,91; p <0.001). The South and Southeast Regions represented those with the highest mortality rates and annual increments. Malignant liver and intrahepatic bile ducts neoplasm have increased for both men and women during the period. The average mortality rate for the country was 3,59 deaths per 100.000 inhabitants with annual linear increase of 0,020 (R = 0,60; p<0.001). Conclusions: regional differences regarding the quality of information on mortality, provision of health services and diagnostics, as well as evidence of a greater prevalence of risk factors for the above mentioned diseases among males could explain the observed upward trend in mortality rates." @default.
