- W958264695 abstract "This chapter outlines a brief historical survey that covers some of the stages of development of vitamins and other trace substances in living materials. The development described in the chapter covers a period of about one third of a century. Progress has been particularly rapid in the last decade during which ubiquinone (coenzyme Q) came into the picture, and Kofler's quirione attracted interest and was identified with plastoquinone. The vitamins K, ubiquinones, and plastoquinones are groups of substances belonging to the higher order called the “bioquinones.” Each group has its own functions in cellular processes. The vitamins K were the first to attract attention because in their absence higher animals suffer from an easily observable hemorrhagic disease. By contrast, the discovery of the plastoquinones and ubiquinones depended entirely upon the skillful application of elaborate analytical and enzymological techniques. The accomplishments represent the work of many investigators directly engaged in the field, but the development of techniques for isolation, identification, and measurement of substances occurring in small amount in living material has been of great importance also." @default.
