- W96006873 abstract "There is a wide recognition throughout the globe and across disciplines that regions of ecological prudence exhibit a symbiotic relationship between habitats and culture. This explicates that culture and environment have held a symbolic relationship throughout human evolution, until the beginning of industrialisation. Societies that live close to nature and natural resources which include tribal societies/indigenous people, have evolved with their environment, modifying nature but actively maintaining it in a diverse and productive state. This is done on the basis of their indigenous and ancient knowledge, and through their symbolic recognition of nature in their socio-cultural practices and or religious beliefs (Ramakrishnan et al. 1998,2000). However, even these traditional societies are no longer immune to the changes linked with over-consumption of natural resources by industrialised societies and the current globalisation of economies. In the ecological dimension, 'global change' represents a whole variety of closely inter-connected events arising out of industrialisation and over-consumption, such as global warming, atmospheric pollution, and alterations in the gaseous composition of the air, pollution of soil and water, unprecedented depletion of biodiversity, accelerated biological invasion, and so on. Today, humans are living off the natural resource capital, converting the landscape into one monoculture of crops/plantations, unsustainably depleting freshwater and fertile top soil capital, leading to large-scale desertification of the" @default.
