- W96058984 abstract "Yajima accelerated interest in ceramic fibres in the 1970's with the creation of Nicalon™ fibre, which was formed, from a preceramic polymer. The past two decades have seen the research and the gradual commercialisation of some preceramic polymers such as poly(carbosilane). Preceramic polymers offer an exciting alternative route to fabricating ceramics. In principle components can be fabricated using conventional polymer processing techniques and then sintered after pyrolysis. As for example future aerospace design technology will require engines to work at higher temperatures and for longer service times, preceramic polymers are potentially the key material. However, the full development of preceramic polymer technology has been retarded because of two inherent problems. These are low ceramic yield and high levels of shrinkage on pyrolysis and sintering. In this paper it will be shown how the ceramic yield was improved and the shrinkage reduced of poly(carbosilane). This research has lead to the development of an in-situ ceramic matrix composite. The sintered ceramic that formed was found, using XRD and TEM analysis, to be a silicon carbide/silicon nitride composite of near-net shape. These developments should enhance the future possibilities for engineering ceramic matrix composites." @default.
