- W960593478 abstract "An individual cardiocyte connects to adjacent cells at the ends and the sides of the cell in various ways. In this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) study, we compared the number and the mode of cardiocyte connections in the left ventricular myocardium between spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) at 8, 15, and 63 weeks of age. Each rat group consisted of five rats. The number of cardiocytes connected to an individual cell was counted in 100 cells in each heart of each rat group. Among the 8-week-old rats hearts, the number of cardiocytes connected to an individual cardiocyte did not differ between the SHR (4.98 ± 0.11/cell) and the WKY (4.99 ± 0.02/cell). From 8 to 63 weeks of age, the number of cardiocyte connections in series significantly increased by 22% in the SHR and by 10% in the WKY, the number of lateral cardiocyte connections significantly decreased by 48% in the SHR and by 24% in the WKY, and the number of all cardiocytes connected to an individual cell significandy decreased by 15% in the SHR and by 8% in the WKY. Furthermore, all three indices were significandy different between the SHR and WKY at 63 weeks of age. These findings suggest that the number of lateral cardiocyte connections selectively reduced with age and that the reduction was more marked in the SHR. In the 63-week-old SHRs, SEM revealed that the hypertrophied myocardium contained some foci of replacement fibrosis in which several cardiocytes had undergone atrophy and some of them were dissociated at cell junctions. The decreased number of lateral cardiocyte connections may be associated with an enhanced propensity for the anisotropic electrical properties that may be more prominent in aged SHR. The age-related anisotropic change of the cardiocyte connections associated with cardiocytic hypertrophy and interstitial fibrosis may be one of the important mechanism of cardiac dysfunction and arrhythmia in hypertrophied myocardium as structural heart disease." @default.
