- W96173726 abstract "The central element in the Swedish labour movement's attitude towards cultivation was the separation of the good from the bad, the great works of art from popular culture. The main object of this study is to investigate changes in this attitude during the twentieth century. What is for example the explanation of the fact that the working class was the great consumer of that same popular culture, which the workers' movement for popular education had made it its main task to combat? The attitude towards cultivation had important roots in the Swedish author Ellen Key's thinking. Key's romantic and idealistic philosophy had a great impact on the growing popular education movements, and her demand for aesthetic simplicity and the production of things adapted to their purpose also influenced aesthetic modernism, especially in the fields of design and architecture. Despite other differences, the attitude towards cultivation was hence important to proponents of popular education and aesthetic modernism alike. It was in fact shared by the political parties on the right as well as the left. There was an expectation after the Second World War that the economic and social construction of the welfare state would automatically result in an equivalent improvement of the cultural standard. When this did not happen, there was disappointment in the labour movement. In the 1950s, the attitude towards cultivation was somewhat weakened, but the massive attack on the attitude took place in the early 60s. In spite of the fact that the cultural values have become increasingly diverse, the old attitude towards cultivation still exists; in the new cultural policy of the state from 1974 on, the defence of traditional cultural values is combined with effective distribution and democratic participation." @default.
