- W962628529 abstract "Freshwater fishes are the world’s most speciose vertebratesand their variety staggers the imagination. There are species with suction-cap oral disks, saw-likerostrums, flamboyant barbels, poisonous spines andeven lungs. Some lack eyes and scales; some have finsbetter adapted to climbing than swimming. Othersguard their eggs or young; some keep them in theirmouths, in a pouch, or even attached to their heads!Flashes of colour are a feature of many species, buteven dull or camouflaged species can have spectacularnuptial displays. Movements can be local sorties, regularforays between fresh water and sea water or opportunisticjourneys over thousands of kilometres duringfloods, and might include burrowing into sediments tosurvive dry times. Within and between populationsthere are likely to be variations in such biological traitsas appearance, habitat use, diet, spawning, diseaseresistance, movements and behaviour. The remarkablevariability of fishes contributes to ecologically diverseaquatic ecosystems and to diversity in populations, families, genera, species and individuals, collectively‘biological diversity’ or simply ‘biodiversity’ (Fig. 3.1).This chapter is a primer on genetics for fish ecologists, recognising that advances in genetics are playingan increasing role in our understanding of patterns ofbiodiversity and underlying evolutionary processes. Itdescribes approaches that (a) document biodiversity, relationships and identity, (b) explore processes suchas dispersal and population dynamics and (c) providedata on species, populations and individuals to informmanagement and conservation planning of Australianfreshwater fishes. These approaches are readily translatedinto questions. When did these species diverge? Are these two forms members of the same species? Isthis species diadromous? How many subpopulations, stocks or conservation units are present? Is there evidenceof current or historical dispersal between thesepopulations or regions? What larva is that, and whatare these fish remains in the gut contents? Is there adifferent way to tag fish? Did the colourful or the subordinatemale sire these offspring? Which broodstockshould we spawn? Genetic data can help to answerquestions like these." @default.
