- W963144826 abstract "This chapter proposes that microsaccades can be both binocular and monocular with different statistical properties, in particular with different mean orientations. When viewing a stationary object, the eyes perform miniature eye movements, which are classified as drift, tremor, and microsaccades. While drift and tremor are irregular movements with a low correlation between the eyes, microsaccades are ballistic movements, traditionally defined as “binocular phenomena.” Microsaccades are traditionally believed to be error-correcting. If it is assumed that tremor and drift are uncorrelated between the eyes, microsaccades will have to be error-correcting to maintain binocular coordination. However, there are two observations rejecting this function for microsaccades. First, microsaccades can be suppressed voluntarily in high-acuity observation tasks. Second, when microsaccades are suppressed, slow eye movements—that is, drift and tremor—maintain both fixation position and binocular coordination. If it is assumed that monocular microsaccades occur only as an artifact of algorithm, the fixed relation between peak velocity and amplitude should no longer hold for monocular microsaccades because there is no reason peak velocity and amplitude should be in a fixed relation for drift and tremor components." @default.
