- W96449192 abstract "This chapter discusses the neuroendocrine regulation of sex pheromone and mediated behavior in ixodid ticks. Three organs are used for detection of chemical signals in ticks: (1) Haller's organ on the first leg tarsi, (2) the terminal segment of the palps, and (3) the cheliceral digits. Haller's organ consists of an anterior trough with six or seven setiform sensilla and a posterior capsule with both setiform and pleomorphic sensilla, exposed only by a small pore or narrow slit. The anterior trough in most ixodid species that have been studied has at least four types of setiform sensilla, including a large, broadly based multiporose seta (ap-1) serving as a sensillum basiconica. In addition, a group of setae on a ridge or hump anterior to the trough contain one or more multiporose setae similar to ap-1. This is the sensillum type that serves to detect the sex attractant pheromone, 2,6-DCP. Tick chelicerae also contain receptors that detect sex pheromones—specifically, the genital sex pheromone described by Sonenshine et al. Porose sensilla, including at least one innervated by chemoreceptive dendrites, occur on the inner cheliceral digits." @default.
