- W96457023 abstract "This chapter focuses on few examples of the ultrafast events in matter and their measurement. The simplest system is the single atom, in which wave packets representing the motion of the electron in a Rydberg orbit can be analyzed with ultrafast techniques. The single atom proceeds towards simple molecules to dissociating molecules—a step towards chemical reactions. The next form of arrangement of atoms is the condensed matter, in which the femtosecond (fs) techniques are considered powerful in analyzing the changes of phase. The fs techniques are useful tools in unraveling the primary processes of vision and photosynthesis. There are several techniques to monitor the quantum state of excited molecules. They are based on the fact that the interaction strength with a second light pulse depends on the instantaneous location and shape of the wave packet. If an experiment is carried out in a molecular beam, a delayed fs pulse can be used to excite the molecule from state B to a dissociative state. The resulting fragments can be monitored with a mass spectrometer. The chapter concludes by discussing the techniques involving ultrashort optical and electrical pulses to localize the wave packets in the radial and angular coordinates." @default.
