- W965226772 abstract "Leishmaniasis is considered an emerging disease worldwide. In Ecuador it has been reported in 22 of the 24 country´s provinces. The sandfly species, Ny. trapidoi, is the main vector of this disease. In the present study entomological collections were carried out between February and April 2013 in 3 provinces of Ecuador (Bolivar, Esmeraldas y Manabi). From this collections there were found 1506 sand flies specimens, from which 46,8% were males and 53,2% were females. It was possible to identified 14 species of sand flies, from which Pressatia dysponeta, Psychodopygus panamensis, Lutzomyia hartmanni and Nyssomyia trapidoi were the most abundant. Ny. trapidoi was found in 6 out of the 7 places of collection. The province with more sand fly diversity was Manabi. A nucleotide analysis of the mitochondrial genes, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome B (CytB) was performed for 45 specimens of Ny. trapidoi. From this analysis the samples were grouped in four clusters; three of them consisted of individuals from the province of Bolivar, and the fourth one grouped specimens from the three studied provinces. This results could suggest that Ny. trapidoi is going through sympatric speciation (different populations in Bolivar ) and allopatric speciation (between populations in Bolivar and the other provinces). Finally, it was found that 12,2% of the female samples analyzed were infected with Endotrypanum monterogeii, a parasite from the Trypanosomatidae family that is closely related to Leishmania. This finding may suggest that, in the places of collection the principal vector of leishmaniasis is probably a another specie of sandfly." @default.
