The status of magnet-free instruments from the literature is discussed and the chapter gives the design principles for a parabolic-path-type instrument. Several types of nonmagnetic time-of-flight mass spectrometers are in operation. The electrostatic spectrometer employs a set of rf fields and drift spaces. The main difference is that by means of parabolic ion paths, high energy resolution is achieved. A continuous parallel ion beam of constant energy first passes a modulator, which consists of three parallel electrodes. Mass discrimination is achieved by varying the rf frequency. To improve the resolution a greater number of modulators and drift spaces may be employed." @default.
