- W96621095 abstract "The flow of action and thought in Nicholas Nickleby is fre? quently arrested by Mrs. Nickleby's soliloquies in which she opti? mistically prophesies a happier, wealthier future for herself and her family. Her comments are best described by Dickens, who mentions in one instance that observations were partly addressed to the old gentleman, partly to Kate, and partly delivered in soliloquy.1 monologue, or series of soliloquies, recurs throughout the novel, and close inspection reveals that rather than being the mere ramblings of a visionary old lady these dreams are an integral part of the structure of the novel. Dickens was fully cognizant of the evils of society, but early in his career he manifested a strain of optimism that ameliorated his otherwise pessimistic outlook. Mrs. Nickleby's eternal optimism, for example, counters the otherwise bleak pictures of the novel, and it likewise correlates with the commonplace expectation that at any time a person might come into great wealth or power. Victorian dream?if it may be called such?found general acceptance during the 1830's and 1840's. This renewal of hope about 1830 had its basis in the idea of progress, which had first clearly emerged in the Renaissance.2 According to Walter E. Houghton, 1830 was also the year when the decline of faith in progress was reversed and its upward movement began again?partly through the persuasive efforts of Carlyle, Mill, and Macaulay.3 Dickens' work as a reporter and his research for his novels kept him abreast of this trend; and although he could not fully share it, he could not, at first, wholly disregard it.4 Dickens finally renounces this ideal in Great Expectations, but Edgar Johnson notes that Pip's 'great expectations' were the great expectations of society," @default.
