- W966435833 abstract "There are a number of fungi capable of infecting various superficial structures, including hair, nails, stratum corneum of the skin, the cornea, and the lining of the external ear canal. These infections are to be distinguished from deeper forms of cutaneous mycoses, including blastomycosis, sporotrichosis, mycetomas, and the like. Superficial candidiasis and dermatophytosis are described in other chapters, so this discussion will cover tinea versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis, tinea nigra, white and black piedra, fungal keratitis of the cornea, and fungal otitis externa. The portal for all these diseases is usually the surface that is infected. Deep and/or disseminated infections with Malassezia and Trichosporon also occur in certain predisposed patients, and with this kind of infection the portal may not be as obvious. The various pathogens and associated conditions are listed in Table I." @default.
