- W96679230 abstract "This chapter focuses on organic contaminant speciation and bioavailability in the terrestrial environment. Organic contaminants are ubiquitous in the terrestrial environment. Many compounds considered environmental pollutants are both persistent and exhibit toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic potential. Environmental abundance, distribution, bioavailability, and ecotoxicity of organic pollutants can be better understood in terms of individual chemical species. The toxicity, environmental behavior, and bioavailability of organic compounds are known to be strongly dependent on compound structure and associated physical and chemical properties. In this chapter, charged species are discussed as an illustration of the importance of assessing the bioavailability of specific compound species present in the soil environment for accurate risk assessment purposes. Concepts related to speciation, toxicity, and abundance of different types of compounds in soils including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are discussed. Bioavailability of organic compounds in soil, and factors influencing compound bioavailability are described. Also, bioavailability and uptake in organisms is elaborated. Implications for risk based corrective action are also reviewed in the chapter." @default.
