- W966941805 abstract "The choice of a diagnostic tissue for mineral nutrient analysis of sugarcane (Saccharurn spp., a complex trispecies hybrid) varies throughout the world. The objective of this study was to compare six diagnostic tissues which are used in various sugarcane growing countries and to select the best one in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, and applicability. The six tissues were: (1 ) the top visible dewlap (TVD) leaf blade, (2) the TVD leaf lamina, (3) the middle portion of the TVD leaf blade, (4) the middle portions of the elongating leaf laminae (from leaves +3 to +4), (5) the elongating leaf sheaths (from leaves +3 t o t 6), and (6) the whole above-ground plant. Samples were obtained at 5 months of age from four commercial first ratoon cane fields in the Everglades Agricultural Area. Each field was divided into four sites. Six duplicates tissue samples were randomly collected from each site. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with blocks consisting of fields and sites nested within fields. Tissue samples were analyzed for N, P, M, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu, and Zn. qugar yield estimation was made prior to harvest. Data from the TVD leaf blade, the TVD leaf lamina. and the middle portion of the TVD leaf blade resulted in relatively high correlation coefficients between cane yield and nutrient concentrations. All tissueslwere well correlated with the whole plant nutrient status. Nutrient concentrations were not statistically different between the whole TVD leaf blade and the middle portion of the TVD leaf blade. The practice of sub-sampling the middle portion from the whole leaf appeared to be unnecessary. The middle portion of the TVD leaf blade resulted in large coefficients of variation among replicates. Selection of the TVD leaf, with or without its midrib, insured precision of tissue analysis by offering low variability among replicates. The TVD leaf is well defined and easily accessible, making it the tissue of choice for estimating the nutrient status of sugarcane.
