Macroscopic order is achieved in the photoactive thin film by exploiting the inherent tendency of liquid crystals to self-organize: columnar discotic phases with some crystalline dislocations constitute a possible photoinitiated conduction pathway between the illuminated and dark electrodes. A scientific rationale for the unusual photovoltaic effect observed in this symmetrical cell is offered, with particular emphasis on the molecular features necessary for efficient current generation. The efficiency of cells constructed from the zinc and palladium octakis(β-octoxyethyl) porphyrins is compared, and the possibility of analogously employing hexakis(alkoxy)triphenylenes and tetrakis(alkoxymethyl)tetrathiafulvalenes is considered." @default.
