This chapter focuses on the relationships between nematodes and ecosystem health. It describes, from a nematologist's perspective, how bioassessment strategies integrate the health and contamination of ecosystems. Understanding the scales of biodiversity and their contributions to the structure and function of agroecosystems is basic to understanding the ecology of crop production and pest management. Soil pollution constitutes a threat to ecosystem health that usually results from mixtures of toxic chemicals, rather than from single compounds. The relationship between nematodes and ecosystem health and the opportunities for using nematodes in bioassessment depend on: patterns of nematode succession, contributions in detrital foodwebs, and knowledge of ecotoxicology. Succession in nematode communities is an expansive process, with biodiversity increasing across taxonomic and functional scales of richness." @default.
