- W96758639 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on acute and chronic control of colonic chloride secretion by mast cell mediators. The chapter discusses those facets of immune-related intestinal secretion that are likely to be mediated, at least in part, by direct effects of mast cell mediators on the properties of the epithelium. Mast cells produce a very wide range of substances when activated by the combination of antigen with membrane-bound IgE. Among these mediators are substances that are stored in the granules and released by a process of degranulation. Mediators in this class include histamine, proteoglycans such as heparin and chondroitin sulfate, and a variety of proteolytic enzymes. Mast cells also have the capacity to synthesize mediators de novo once activated. Mast cell mediators may induce secretion at the intracellular level by a variety of mechanisms. In common with other prostaglandins, prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) is thought to act by increasing cellular levels of cAMP." @default.
