- W968246105 abstract "The Na/K pump in the plasma membrane of mammalian cells carries out uphill transport of Na + and K + ions at the expense of free energy of ATP hydrolysis. Because in a single turnover three Na + are moved outward and two K + inward, the transport process is associated with the translocation of net charge. The electrogenic nature of the Na/K pump has interesting consequences. The pump acts as a current generator and contributes to the membrane potential of cells. Furthermore, the transport rate becomes a function of transmembrane voltage. Of particular interest is this question: In which step(s) of the transport cycle is charge translocated? This problem may be studied by recording transient, pump-generated currents after an ATP concentration jump. Further information on the nature of the electrogenic reactions in the pumping cycle may be obtained by investigating the current-voltage behavior of the pump.." @default.
