- W9684933 abstract "This chapter discusses the extent to which technology has influenced man's brain. There are three important functions of the brain, including its ability to perform arithmetical calculations, its ability to make decisions, and its ability to memorize. The computer has extended all of these abilities. The Frenchman, Pascal, invented his mechanical digital calculator in 1642. Known as the Pascaline it worked very well, and some examples still survive to this day. It used gear wheels and cams in a similar way to the odometer in a car's speedometer. The calculating capacity depended on the number of stepped rolls. Above each roll was a ten-toothed gear wheel that could be set in various positions along a square shaft by a means of an external setting device. It was noted that capacity and speed of access were very important. Main store is required as a working space for the current program, and is only intended to retain information on a temporary basis. Magnetic tape and magnetic discs are common forms of backing store. The principle of operation of these devices is similar to that of the well-known tape recorder, but pulses representing patterns of bits are recorded instead of complex musical waveforms." @default.
