- W968560493 abstract "This chapter discusses mathematical models for a few important problems that arise as a result of the compaction of porous solids. It reviews the classical work of Terzaghi. One of the strongest incentives for the creation of the science of soil mechanics has been the remarkable success of Terzaghi's analysis in predicting the one-dimensional behavior of a wide variety of porous media. Accordingly, several modifications, such as the variation in permeability, compressibility, etc., have been incorporated. Terzaghi's solution of the consolidation problem involves the consideration of a one-dimensional shrinkage of a porous column due to a single-step function change in pressure at the base of the column. The Terzaghi's solution neglects the movements of the solid particles of the porous column. The chapter considers a mathematical model that describes the idealized radial flow of a compressible liquid, with pressure-dependent properties, toward a well located at the center of a closed radial reservoir undergoing compaction. This single-well reservoir is assumed to be producing at a constant rate. Lateral components of deformation are assumed to be negligible. The change in the thickness of the reservoir is accounted for through calculations using the compressibility of the reservoir rock. The chapter also examines the three-dimensional deformation of porous solids. It also examines the bulk stress–strain relationships governing such deformations and discusses the general methods of solutions." @default.
