- W968943695 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the mosaic proteins. Horizontal transfer is a rapid process that allows the acquisition of novel phenotypes. During its relatively short lifetime, a single bacterium can acquire a particular determinant and pass on its newfound ability to all its descendents. As long as the acquired determinant originated outside the bacterium itself, the transfer is horizontal. Often this process involves the acquisition of complete genes or of operons. Even more frequently, though, the process involves acquisition of only segments of genes. In both cases, Mosaic patterns are created in the recipient bacterium, the former process creating mosaic operons and chromosomes and the latter, mosaic genes and proteins. This chapter focuses on the latter process as it occurs in bacterial genomes with a focus on the evolution of surface protein genes that function in the interface between host and pathogen. The advantage to the recipient bacterium in acquiring a determinant through the mosaic process is the equivalent of not having to reinvent the wheel. The creation of a new mosaic pattern within a gene has an immediate effect on the amino acid sequence of the encoded protein. Horizontal transfer thus, efficiently enables a protein to add a new function or alter a previous function." @default.
