- W97001629 abstract "Previous geochemical studies have suggested that ferric and manganic oxides may be an important oxidants for the removal of aromatic contaminants from groundwater. Studies in which ({sup 14}C)-tracers were injected into various surface and subsurface sediments demonstrated that aromatic compounds could be completely oxidized to carbon dioxide in the iron-reducing zone. This oxidation was dependent upon microbial activity. Enrichment cultures were obtained which could oxidize potential aromatic contaminants such as aromatic hydro-carbons, phenol, cresols, and aromatic acids with the reduction of ferric oxides. The vast majority of these aromatics did not react with ferric oxides in the absence of iron-reducing microorganisms. These studies have demonstrated that, at the circumneutral pHs typical of most sedimentary environments, the oxidation of aromatic contaminants coupled to iron reduction is the result of enzymatically catalyzed reactions." @default.
