- W97020013 abstract "Recycled fibres have become increasingly important as raw materials in the pulp and paper industry. Full utilisation of recycled fibres can not only ease the shortage of plant fibre resource but also save energy consumption, as well as effectively reduce the pollution load caused by papermaking processes. Although utilisation of secondary fibres has environmental and economical advantages, unfortunately their deteriorated drainability causes decreased productivity. Use of enzymes to improve the drainage on a pulp or paper machine has been studied by several mills to increase the production rate. The presence of endoglucanase activity is a prerequisite for improving drainage of recycled fibre by enzymes. Cellobiohydrolase and xylanase act synergistically with endoglucanase to improve its effects. Endoglucanases enhance water removal by hydrolysing the amorphous hydrophilic cellulose, which is the main constituent of the fines formed during refining. By applying purified enzymes on specific regions of the cellulose fibres, the desired part of the pulp can be modified for a particular enzyme application. The combination of enzyme and polymeric flocculants significantly increases the freeness of pulp." @default.
