- W970257385 abstract "This chapter reviews morphological properties of the receptors of the extraocular muscles (EOM) with particular reference to the cat. The problem of the existence of the free spiral ending as a receptor replacing the muscle spindles has been raised. The properties of the palisade endings, behaving like the role tendon endings described in the EOM, have been reviewed with emphasis on a possible sensory function. Attention has been focused on the identification of the single, multi-innervated muscle fiber to which the palisade attaches. These are assumed to be a more sensitive tendon receptor than the Golgi tendon organ. The chapter also reviews the physiological properties of the EOM receptors based on available studies in a number of mammals. The differences between the responses of EOM muscle spindles and those of the EOM free spiral endings have been analyzed. Concerning the tendon receptors, in spite of the fact that nothing is known about their physiological properties, the possibility has been investigated that some of the responses considered as belonging to the cat free spiral ending could be attributed instead to the palisades." @default.
