- W971337658 abstract "Although much has been studied about lipid metabolism and parameters associated with oxidative stress due to the nature of aerobic metabolism, some questions remain to be answered. In relation to physical exercise and to the adaptations induced by training on aerobic metabolism of lipids as well as on indicators of oxidative stress there are points not totally elucidated. It is believed that studies with animals submitted to a hypercholesterolemic diet might contribute with more information in order to push forwards the knowledge about these topics. Many works report that physical activity has been demonstrated to act beneficially on the factors determining lipid metabolism, which can be verified through serum indicators and nutritional evaluation. Such effects proved to be more effective when exercise is combined with a balanced diet. In the present study 48 female Fisher rats were distributed amongst four groups: Exercise (swimming 30 min./day, 5 days/week) with hypercholesterolemic diet (EH), Sedentary with hypercholesterolemic diet (SH), Exercise with control diet (EC) and Sedentary with control diet (SC). After 9 weeks animals were killed 48 after the last training session, the diets being removed 12 hours before sacrifice. The results show that exercise was effective in improving the ratio HDL/LDL and there is no sign of hepatic damage provoked by the activity. There was effect of training on parameters of oxidative stress, increasing free sulphydrils and paraoxonase activity. The efficiency of the training protocol became evident when heart weight was found to be higher in the exercised animals. Creatin kinase did not present difference amongst the studied groups, indicating that there was no lesion in muscle cells induced by training. Also no sign of impairment of the renal function was observed as a result of training. It is suggested that new works be developed with different volumes and intensities of training. From 2006 on other works have been conducted in the Laboratory of Experimental Nutrition where various exercise protocols are tested in order to determine which one is the more indicated for the study of different types of diet." @default.
