- W971887037 abstract "This chapter discusses how an antigenic peptide is produced, how the MHC molecule combines with it, and how the complex is displayed for T cell perusal. The production of antigenic peptides from protein antigens is called antigen processing. Antigen processing provides the host with a means of scanning samples of the proteins constantly being produced and turned over in the body. If a nonself protein is detected in the course of this sampling, the immune response kicks into action to counter the threat. Each antigen-presenting cell (APC) or target cell displays several hundred thousand peptide–MHC complexes on its surface. T cells recognize peptide antigens presented by MHC molecules on the surface of host cells. These peptides are derived from the processing of proteins by either the exogenous (endocytic) or endogenous (cytosolic) pathways. Proteins from entities produced exogenously, such as extracellular bacteria, toxins, and fungi, are processed via the endocytic pathway. These antigens are internalized by specialized APCs and degraded within endocytic compartments. The resulting peptides are actively transported into the endoplasmic reticulum where they bind to newly synthesized MHC class I molecules." @default.
